It seems like every major action star—from John Wayne to Clint Eastwood—has tackled the trope of the rogue cop who ultimately does the right thing, and now Sylvester Stallone takes a turn with “Cobretti.” The character is presented with a leather jacket, an air of self-assurance, and a toothpick perpetually in his mouth, as he investigates what appear to be unrelated violent incidents. What links these crimes appears to be that the victims are all unremarkable people who don't seem to matter to anyone. However, we’re privy to slightly more information than the character is, understanding that it’s crucial for him to protect “Ingrid” (played by Brigitte Nielsen, who delivers a similarly stiff performance) from someone intent on preventing her testimony against his group of secretive backers. The film feels constructed solely to showcase Stallone and lacks any real innovation; however, there are occasional action sequences, and the antagonist brought to mind Conan-Doyle’s somewhat unhinged “Hoxton Creeper,” who performs adequately in his role. We get car chases, gunfights, and plenty of visible injuries, but it's all familiar territory—just with an abundance of overly sentimental songs. The film feels old-fashioned and, to be honest, a little boring. I’m sorry to say that.
