It’s difficult to award even a single star to this film. It was genuinely well-made; Tommy Lee Jones delivered a strong performance, as did Robert Wuhl, and Ron Shelton's contribution was also commendable. However, Al Stump has done baseball a serious injustice with the falsehoods presented here. There wasn’t any requirement to invent details about an already captivating story or involve Ty Cobb in such a negative portrayal. I understand, as someone who studies history, that films aren’t always completely factual...but from the perspective of a fan, this feels deeply disrespectful. It's particularly disheartening considering how much we continue to discuss and admire those players from that time period. The damage done here is more significant than the steroid scandal, even more damaging than what happened to Jackson’s reputation. Despite acknowledging the effort and skill invested in creating the film, I can’t overlook what Al Stump did to baseball's cherished stories and figures. I regret having to give it such a low rating; it isn't due to the performances of Mr. Jones, Mr. Wuhl, or Mr. Shelton, but because of the disservice Stump has rendered to baseball. Watching this is painful, as it forces a revisiting of the lies that have harmed my beloved sport.
