C’mon C’mon presents a lovely exploration of the bond forming between an uncle and nephew. Watching it evoked many different feelings in me, and I found the conclusion to be quite rewarding. The writing is really strong, and the quality of the acting across the board significantly enhances the film. Joaquin Phoenix delivers a wonderful performance, and his rapport with both Woody Norman and Gaby Hoffmann is exceptional. Norman’s work stands out; he demonstrates an impressive emotional depth for such a young performer, making his feelings seem authentic—something that isn't always easy to achieve with child actors. Hoffman also does very well, portraying her struggle to manage both her son and ex-husband convincingly. The visuals are outstanding, and the sound design is superb. Some interesting techniques are used in the interview segments and with the street recordings, resulting in a distinctive auditory experience. My only reservation is that the film feels slightly longer than necessary. While there isn’t much plot happening—which allows for extended time to observe the characters and their relationship develop—it does lead to a rather deliberate pace that could have benefited from a bit of trimming.
