The Wachowskis’ most significant contribution, it seems to me, comes incredibly close to accomplishing something extraordinary, making it hard to fully grasp even after multiple viewings. At its core, the film explores karma—the notion that our actions have consequences extending beyond this lifetime and across several lives. It also presents a concept of interconnectedness, suggesting that no one is truly self-sufficient but rather relies on others. These concepts are developed through what I believe are six distinct narratives spanning three centuries. The same actors portray their characters in different timelines to illustrate the idea of reincarnation and a continuous soul. Although this recurring actor approach aids understanding of the unchanging characters, each story is fragmented and interwoven with the others. Consequently, the film presents six stories unfolding simultaneously, all reinforcing similar themes and following comparable narrative arcs. As I mentioned earlier, it’s attempting something nearly impossible, and it's quite challenging to follow through several viewings (I’ve seen it over ten times). However, I would strongly advise investing the time because ultimately it succeeds in conveying ideas that are difficult to articulate otherwise—try explaining karma to someone unfamiliar with the concept if you’re skeptical. Ultimately, I believe this represents the Wachowskis' real achievement. *The Matrix* was certainly entertaining, but the simulation idea felt novel and exciting initially; however, it ultimately lacks substance. The movie understandably loses its impact beyond the point where “enlightenment” is reached—a limit we all face in our current existence. Conversely, the concept of karma is one of humanity’s most profound attempts to understand life, and here it's presented in a very accessible form.
