Richard Attenborough gathered together a strong group of performers for this sentimental drama set during wartime. In a Belfast struggling with conflict, a young boy named Wilbur (Dylan Roberts) discovers a ring in the wreckage of an airplane from World War II. His attempt to locate its owner brings him into contact with Shirley MacLaine’s character, "Ethel Ann," and the narrative gradually unfolds, using both present-day scenes and flashbacks, to show what transpired between these individuals. The initial portion feels somewhat disconnected; the shifts in time and focus occur too quickly at the beginning before enough context is established for the audience to easily understand what's happening. However, things improve once the purpose of Christopher Plummer’s role as "Jack" becomes more apparent, resulting in a captivating story about lost loves and acts of courage. The film also acknowledges that Belfast continued to experience bombing raids for several years after the war officially ended. While it serves primarily as a showcase for its two lead actors, and isn't the most believable plot, it possesses a certain comforting quality that ultimately makes it work.
