It seems like Kevin Smith has lost his impact. As someone once said, "you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain." It looks like Mr. Smith lived long enough. While *Chasing Amy* remains my personal favorite, films such as *Clerks* and *Mall Rats* were genuine classics, *Clerks II* was genuinely funny, and *Dogma*—particularly for those of us who are Catholic—is remarkably insightful and clever. The *Jay and Silent Bob* movies had their issues with the supporting characters, but ultimately they all shared a common thread... …they poked fun at fandoms in a way that only people deeply involved in things like weekly trips to the comic book store and familiarity with Diamond Distribution can truly understand; fans of geek culture are able to hilariously criticize what they enjoy. He even made jokes about the original *Star Wars*. It was a form of Geek Counter Culture, and we enjoyed it immensely. *Clerks III* has none of that. Smith used to critique popular trends, but now that he’s become part of them, his writing doesn't hold up. The sharpness is gone. What made his earlier work so brilliant has diminished into the realm of commercialism. You are more likely to see him get emotional over a disappointing *Star Wars* film as an obvious advertisement than you are to find him making jokes about how many construction workers died building the second Death Star. The moment he stopped being able to satirize fandoms and playfully tease them, when he ceased criticizing pop culture and began promoting it, he became unimportant. There's no reason to watch *Clerks III*; everything that made the first two films...everything that made most of his early work so good is missing from this one.
