It’s clear what can be achieved when resources are limitless—with one significant exception: the script itself feels lacking in both brevity and imagination. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton manage to deliver solid performances, although their portrayals lean towards being overly dramatic within this sprawling account of a legendary historical figure. Rex Harrison's depiction of Caesar doesn’t quite measure up, but taken as a whole, I believe it surpasses what the reviewers initially stated. The visuals and sheer size of the production are remarkable, and the costumes are equally impressive; when paired with Alex North’s appropriately grand musical score, you genuinely experience the wealth and magnificence of Cleopatra's world. However, the performances from actors like Roddy McDowall, Martin Landau, and Andrew Keir fall short, which causes the narrative to lose momentum as it approaches its conclusion. Despite this, a film on this scale seems unlikely to ever be replicated, and that’s something worth appreciating.
