“Clementine,” Lara Gallagher's debut feature, unfolds at a remote lake house in the Pacific Northwest woods, offering an intimate look at connections between women. The narrative itself isn't complicated, but the emotional toll taken on its central figures is considerable. Following a difficult breakup with a woman who is older and more established, Karen (Otmara Marrero) retreats to her former lover’s vacation home seeking solace. Her solitude is disrupted by Lana (Sydney Sweeney), an enigmatic young woman who sparks an intense fascination within Karen, drawing her into a complicated relationship. While the film explores themes of sexual discovery and maturation, it rises above being simply that—it's welcome to witness another lesbian story portrayed with realistic and layered female characters. The two women find themselves at different points in their lives; Lana is discovering love and desire, while Karen grapples with past disappointments. Karen seems to wish she could recapture a sense of youthful hopefulness, which Lana appears to represent. Their connection goes beyond physical attraction; it’s rooted in shared feelings of isolation and pain stemming from a deep need for affection. The actors deliver understated yet impactful performances, though their on-screen rapport feels somewhat restrained—thankfully, this doesn't hinder the story itself. The film progresses deliberately, with minimal dialogue initially, and some viewers may feel let down that the suspense built up isn’t fully resolved.
