Cleaner seemed to have promise at first. The main character reminded me of a younger, tougher Keira Knightley; she comes across as an appealing woman living in a city today. Unfortunately, antagonists showed up, with Clive Owen heading them—he’s usually been in good films. However, in this one, he plays the villain and is only around briefly. That's disappointing on two levels. Following that, another character takes charge of the bad guys; someone who is violent and unstable. The premise was strong, and there's a fair amount of crime and police work involved. My issue is that it became centered on this violent individual. It’s essentially a British update of Die Hard, only instead of Bruce Willis, you have a young woman doing acrobatics. There are some genuinely suspenseful scenes, but also quite a few awkward ones. The film deals with eco-terrorism, but it's also filled with obvious progressive messaging. Practically everything in this movie is presented as the opposite of what’s considered standard.
