Michael Keaton delivers a strong dramatic performance in this film, coinciding with a period of increased visibility for him. The picture arrived the same year as *Beetlejuice* and just before *Batman*. Kathy Bates is also excellent portraying Charlie. Keaton’s character, Daryl, a money manager, has manipulated financial practices to take client assets. Even while his substance abuse spirals downward, he utilizes a confidential rehabilitation facility to avoid detection by law enforcement. His interactions with Charlie, played by Bates and encountered during rehab, prompt him to commit to sobriety, possibly more so than his girlfriend does. Moments of humor and Daryl’s inherent appeal offer some relief from the heavier themes. There's a scene where Daryl suggests she use prepared lines when speaking with an ex-boyfriend on the phone; she attempts this, displaying the offensive language she receives and questioning why it wasn’t included as a potential reply. The film culminates in a brief speech by Daryl that is both moving and impactful. The specifics are harsh at times, which likely indicates authenticity, and makes the movie worthwhile. It conveys an important point but isn't solely focused on delivering a message. I watched it repeatedly when it initially aired and became available on home video; perhaps it’s time for another viewing.
