The son of an oilman (James Gregory) decides to head to Florida. On a whim, he switches places with a less fortunate man (Will Hutchins) hoping to discover if someone would care for him based on who he is rather than his money. Shelley Fabares portrays his romantic interest, Bill Bixby acts as his competitor, and Gary Merrill plays a businessman involved in boats. “Clambake” (1967) marked Elvis’ 25th film appearance and only six more would follow before he exited the movie industry entirely. Following this picture's release, he had just ten years left to live. It’s an enjoyable film that demonstrates not every one of his late-sixties movies was bad. Although it doesn't reach the quality of “Blue Hawaii” (1961), "Kid Galahad" (1962), “Roustabout” (1964) and “Viva Las Vegas" (1964), it’s entertaining as a lighthearted, somewhat silly drama/musical. It's definitely more engaging than “Fun in Acapulco” (1963), “Kissin’ Cousins” (1964) and “Spinout” (1966). Will Hutchins, playing Elvis’ sidekick, contributes significantly to the film’s entertainment value, and it's always nice seeing Bixby and Merrill. Fabares is charming, but I didn’t find her particularly captivating. Several other women have smaller roles as well, including Angelique Pettyjohn and Marj Dusay. The clambake song-and-dance sequence stands out as a memorable representation of the 1960s; it's exceptionally done overall. The playground scene with children and the unusual song "Confidence" is sweet and heartwarming. Around this time, Elvis began to experience weight issues and felt frustrated about making fluffy musical films when he wanted to tackle more serious projects. To make matters worse, the film’s less-than-stellar performance at the box office meant that this was the last movie where he could demand his $1 million fee. Despite all of that, Elvis appeared energetic and lively. There's no question he still possessed his charisma. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 39 minutes, with some scenes filmed in Miami, the Florida Keys & the Everglades, Florida, while all of Elvis’ portions were shot at Universal Studios & Van Nuys, California.
