I’ve followed John C. Reilly’s career from early roles like 'Hoffa' and 'Dolores Claiborne' through films such as 'Step Brothers' and 'Carnage,' so I was hoping this movie would be good. However, with the current number of vampire movies coming out of Hollywood—it seems like a direct result of the popularity of ‘Twilight’—I think it’s time to put an end to this trend, at least temporarily, so that fresh ideas can emerge; it feels completely exhausted. I doubt Bram Stoker envisioned anything like this with his original 'Dracula.' These recent films are overloaded with computer-generated imagery and lack any real substance. It's easy to imagine the character Dr. Alucard regretting his immortality just to avoid seeing something like this at a movie theater. Similar to another film I attempted to enjoy, but which quickly spiraled out of control into an overwhelming spectacle of effects that were unnecessary ('Your Highness' by David Gordon Green), the filmmakers mistakenly believed they needed to keep audiences engaged with constant action sequences. It’s comparable to seeing yet another explosion in a Michael Bay movie: What’s really needed is a) a strong performance from an actor, like those given by Sir Christopher Lee, Sir Peter Cushing, Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, and Bela Lugosi; b) a compelling narrative; and c) a director who understands how to tell a story. Otherwise, I'd rather skip drinking blood altogether and find something else to watch instead of contemporary films. I’m not at all surprised this film didn’t perform well financially or that the studio decided against making more installments in the series. Even for vampires, there can simply be too much of a good thing.
