It feels like there are several American entertainers who don’t get the recognition they deserve at home. I recall watching Jerry Lewis’s fundraising telecasts for Muscular Dystrophy as a child, enjoying his appearances and even noticing when he'd step away to use the restroom, grab something to eat, or just rest during the breaks when the broadcast switched to local stations. I watched quite a few of his movies years ago—though it’s difficult now, after so many years, to remember exactly which ones—and appreciated what he did, so I've been trying to collect his films from his best period and watch them again. I really enjoyed his version of the Cinderella story; I found it funny and skillfully put together. It was also a pleasure to see Judith Anderson and Henry Silva, both actors whose work I admire, in this film, and witnessing the famous ‘staircase scene’ was remarkable, especially considering he was dealing with severe back pain—the result of an accident during a Las Vegas show—and had just experienced his first heart attack while attempting to complete it in one continuous shot. This would be perfect to pair with 'Blazing Saddles'--both are comedies featuring The Count Basie Orchestra.
