Cinderella functions as a jukebox musical, drawing from a familiar fairy tale and incorporating CGI animals, along with the increasingly common diverse cast—though these performers mostly appear in background roles; nearly all of the central characters, aside from Camila Cabello's role, are portrayed by Caucasian actors. It’s hard to imagine how the writing could be any less imaginative. It truly doesn’t get more uninspired than this. To illustrate my point, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s songs for Hamilton or In the Heights might seem scattered at times, but he personally wrote them and it's clear that he didn’t need assistance in doing so. Instead, what we have here is a combination of the worst elements: covers stripped down to the point they barely register, alongside original compositions so unremarkable that they make the covers sound comparatively good. While Rocketman isn’t exactly stellar, at least it makes sense as a jukebox musical; you'd naturally expect to hear Elton John songs in a film about his life. Still, if I wanted to listen to John’s version of “Pinball Wizard,” I would watch Tommy rather than Rocketman. Similarly, if I were looking for a Cinderella musical, the definitive example remains the 1950 Disney adaptation, which features original songs specifically written for the movie—a stark contrast to this film's collection of tracks that fail at the two essential purposes of music in a musical: advancing the narrative and fleshing out the characters (I can’t even begin to guess how a combination of “Whatta Man” and “Seven Nation Army” would achieve either). Especially when I have easy access to the original, superior recordings performed by the artists who created them. The only exception to the predominantly white main cast is the Fabulous Godmother, portrayed with considerable energy by Billy Porter; this character is the only one that feels genuinely alive, a quality attributable to the actor’s performance rather than the writing or direction. The rest of the performers—even Pierce Brosnan and Minnie Driver—are so indistinct and easily overlooked that they could have been CGI creations like the animals.
