I went into this wanting to like it! The cast seemed promising – a group of seasoned performers alongside impressive visuals and current pop songs – and I was hoping they’d revitalize the classic narrative. Unfortunately, my hopes were completely misplaced; it turned out to be a victory for wishful thinking over reality. It's just awful. Visually appealing and professionally made, yes, but still terrible. Is anyone else as tired of being yelled at by Idina Menzel? Pierce Brosnan showed in "Mamma Mia" (2008) that he’s comfortable with a playful approach to his roles, but I suspect he was uncomfortable here; similarly, Minnie Driver and numerous British comedians fronted by the consistently untalented James Corden. Billy Porter attempts a fresh spin on the fairy godmother, but doesn't appear enough to make a significant difference in what is otherwise an incredibly bland presentation that hit its low point with the sweet but completely stiff pairing of Nicholas Galitzine (Freddie Mercury would be horrified) and Camila Cabello. I apologize, perhaps if I were six years old and hadn’t seen anything else, I wouldn't be so critical – but I have, and this is simply bad, really bad.
