It’s hard for me to understand the extreme division in opinions surrounding this film about Churchill. He did have a past, before the World Wars, as someone who genuinely held Imperialist views; and whether you agree with those beliefs or not, his behaviors – drinking, moodiness, arrogance, and inspiring speeches – all shaped the man who was so important to Britain’s survival starting in late 1940. The movie does show how his power lessened as the war turned in favor of the Allies, mirroring Britain's decreasing influence on the world stage. It is a dramatic presentation, with solid performances from Miranda Richardson and Richard Durden (as the consistently understanding Gen. Jan Smuts), and not intended to be an historical account. Some artistic freedom was necessary when portraying him and his complicated but energetic personality if we were ever going to get a feel for who he truly was. If you’re looking for something factual, Lucy Carter's "Churchill" from 2003 is likely the better choice.
