I'd have to say this is likely my top pick from Wong Kar-Wai’s filmography. It centers on two Hong Kong police officers. One, portrayed by the charismatic Takeshi Kaneshiro, is dealing with a recent five-year relationship that has ended. As a way of moving forward, he buys a can of pineapple daily, ensuring it's dated to expire on May 1st – when he will turn 25; by then, he hopes to have reconciled or find another love, and maybe an intriguing woman with a mysterious air, disguised in a raincoat and blonde wig, could provide that. The other story involves Tony Leung, a familiar face in the director’s films, who has also gone through a breakup and found someone new working at the food stall he visits each evening. She is equally puzzling – and she likes to play “California Dreamin’” at full volume. Both narratives are genuinely pleasant to follow; the humor is abundant but understated—and you're never really certain how things will unfold, or even if the two stories will connect, until the very end. The close-up camera work allows the characters’ personalities to emerge effectively, providing a sense of closeness and drawing viewers into these delicate character explorations set against the backdrop of this vibrant city environment.
