I began the evening at Sadler’s Wells with Sir Matthew Bourne’s version of "Edward Scissorhands," and my friend returned the favor by taking me to a very late showing of this—apparently John Waters’ choice for a Christmas film. The shift from something beautiful to utterly absurd was striking. It centers on “Harry,” a man who has never accepted that there isn't really a Santa Claus. I suppose I’ve spoiled things if you didn’t already know. Now, as an adult, he (played by Brandon Maggart) is a skilled and respected toy maker, but the children receiving these toys seem increasingly ungrateful. The atmosphere builds, he reaches his limit—and then no one is safe from his vengeful actions, which occasionally feel appropriate. I have to say, I found it pretty awful, though it does manage to convey a worthwhile point. It critiques our disposable society and also touches on the loneliness that can accompany Christmas; how many people take these celebrations for granted, and how little of the original spirit—frankincense, myrrh, gold—remains. Perhaps understanding more about the film or Maggart beforehand might make it better, but I went in without any background information and left feeling confused, a bit bored, and questioning whether the movie itself is just exploiting Christmas cynicism as much as the story suggests.
