Duff’s reliably charming performance as Belle carries the film, portraying a woman dispatched by her father, Howell, to evaluate an estate belonging to the solitary Gonzalez. He favors shirtless scenes and happens to own a dog named Beast—enough hints to grasp the premise. A resentful suitor and the approaching holidays further contribute to this somewhat indistinct romantic storyline, which proves quite enjoyable. It’s exactly what one expects from a holiday movie geared toward those who hold onto the idea of fulfilled aspirations. Duff's presence is truly the highlight; she’s consistently endearing and manages to lend an air of believability to this lighthearted fare.
