Christine is an American horror film from acclaimed director John Carpenter. The screenplay, written by Stephen King and Bill Phillips, adapts a novel of the same name by King. Mark Tarlov, Richard Kobritz, and Kirby McCauley produced the movie in collaboration with Columbia Pictures and Polar Film; it stars Keith Gordon, John Stockwell, and Alexandra Paul and was released on December 9th, 1983, in North America, Canada, and Turkey. The story centers around Arnie, a teenager who is often bullied but finds comfort in his friendship with Dennis. However, things change when Arnie becomes fixated on his possessed car—a sinister 1958 Plymouth Fury named Christine. Those close to him notice a shift in his behavior, and then people start dying. Is he retaliating against those who mistreat him, or is the car responsible? It’s difficult to understand exactly how or why Christine operates. She appears to be possessed, but also influences people through some form of mental connection. During one scene at a drive-in movie theater, Christine causes Arnie's date, Leigh, to choke on a hamburger—her throat closes seemingly without explanation. The music swells, the dashboard lights intensify, and the doors lock. That uncertainty is what makes it unsettling. Christine is a relentless killer, willing to destroy herself for violence, apparently confident in her ability to return. She’s an unstoppable force of destruction. This film feels perfectly suited for viewing during the darker months of the year; its atmosphere is gloomy and oppressive. Early John Carpenter films are consistently impressive, even those created during less successful periods. Following a box office disappointment with *The Thing*, Carpenter was initially reluctant to direct this project but ultimately agreed. It’s a good way to satisfy that craving for something scary. The film's world-building is incredibly detailed and vibrant, enhanced by a fantastic soundtrack featuring eerie 1950s songs alongside Carpenter’s signature synthesizer music. The acting is also superb; Keith Gordon delivers a memorable performance as Arnie, elevating him beyond the typical “nerd” stereotype. John Stockwell plays Dennis, his loyal companion, and Harry Dean Stanton shines as the detective, bringing a subtle slyness to his role—rest in peace, Mr. Stanton. Alexandra Paul, Robert Prosky, and William Ostrander are also excellent. I highly recommend Christine. It’s a Stephen King story brought to life by John Carpenter, and it stands out as one of the better adaptations of his work, even with its deviations from the source material. While Carpenter might not view this film favorably, it's more than just a contractual obligation; it’s genuinely good.
