There's a certain captivating quality to moments within this drama as we look back with “France” (Mireille Perrier), who’s returning to the now self-governing Cameroon, her childhood home. Her father, "Marc" (François Cluzet), is an amiable colonial administrator in a remote area, and that's where she resides with her mother “Aimée” (Giulia Boschi) and their strikingly handsome employee, “Protée” (Isaach De Bankolé). With her dad often away on various assignments, her mother manages the plantation and depends heavily on their handyman-like worker. Along with a rather unpredictable chef – who seemed most comfortable preparing Yorkshire Pudding – they maintain a reasonably pleasant existence, but between "Aimée" and "Protée," there's an undeniable sexual tension that remains unacted upon, yet intensely present. He performs his somewhat routine duties with poise and self-respect, even though he receives little recognition—and this delicate balance is significantly challenged when visitors arrive and must wait while transportation is arranged to take them onward. The arrival of the excessively forward and arrogant “Luc” (Jean-Claude Adelin) only intensifies the already charged atmosphere, but perhaps he will be the one to trigger a full eruption? Much of the story unfolds from a child’s perspective, and Cecile Ducasse delivers an appealing performance as the pampered yet well-mannered young girl. She also feels affection for her tall and imposing guardian, and in that capacity, I felt De Bankolé successfully combined his character's inherent dignity with a sense of obligation that was likely degrading, but it was simply part of his job—and he didn’t do things halfway. Despite the heightened dramatic elements, there are some amusing moments (mostly from the volatile cook), and while it certainly highlights the injustices of colonialism, I don't believe that's its primary focus. It seemed more concerned with demonstrating and maintaining respect – and in that regard, both performers portrayed their roles with considerable sensitivity.
