Having grown up watching John Wayne—my dad was a devoted fan of westerns—I continue to enjoy these older films featuring him. It's hard to find a John Wayne film I dislike, even though they all feel pretty dated compared to today’s action-heavy movies with elaborate special effects. This one stands out as being among the better examples. Wayne is simply playing his familiar role: a somewhat surly, tough cowboy. The part of Chisum seems ideally suited for him. While the supporting cast delivers acceptable performances, it's really John Wayne who carries the film. The plot follows a fairly typical western storyline about acquiring land, stealing cattle, and using intimidation—a narrative where two men gradually work toward an inevitable showdown, complete with a substantial amount of gunfire, as is customary in the genre. A bit of fisticuffs are included too. There’s nothing remarkable about the story itself, nor the acting or cinematography. It's just exactly what I would anticipate, or at least hope for, from this type of movie. The whole film feels comfortably traditional. The fact that it concludes on a fairly positive note is certainly an added bonus. Ultimately, this movie provides straightforward and uncomplicated enjoyment.
