Aline Küppenheim delivers a noteworthy performance as a woman from a comfortable background—married to a physician—who becomes involved with secretive dealings during Chile’s Pinochet era. Her initial desire is simply to have their vacation home painted, but when the local priest (Hugo Medina) asks "Carmen" to assist an injured young man, she unexpectedly encounters several risks upon learning that “Elías” (Nicolás Sepúlveda) has been shot and is fleeing while being pursued by law enforcement. Throughout the film's ninety-minute length, a strong feeling of danger emerges as we witness her cautious movements, constant vigilance, deceptive actions, and changes in transportation—elements reminiscent of a John Le Carré story rather than everyday existence in what was presented as a civilized country in the 1970s. The drama’s impact is heightened by the restraint shown in depicting the regime's brutality; instead of overt displays of oppression, it’s her altered conduct and evolving relationship with “Elías” that quietly convey an atmosphere of threat. While I wasn't particularly fond of the music and some viewers may dislike the unresolved ending, I felt—similar to the reality of living in this troubled nation—that these aspects ultimately strengthened the film. It's a movie worth seeing.
