Chevalier isn't reinventing the biographical film, but it’s an exceptionally made movie that proves to be quite enjoyable. Stephen Williams’ direction really stood out; his use of seamless transitions and camera work within a three-dimensional space pulled me into the characters’ world. A specific moment—when Joseph Bologne was composing his opera while also falling in love with Marie-Josephine—was especially good, demonstrating Williams' skill at communicating feeling through his directing choices. The film's musical score was also fantastic and really enhanced the experience of watching it. I typically don’t care for classical music, but several pieces from this movie will definitely be going into my own music collection. The sets and character designs were good too, though there were a few instances where the cityscapes appeared somewhat artificial due to CGI. It wasn't a huge problem, but it was noticeable enough to take away slightly from the film’s visual style. The story behind Chevalier was pretty captivating, and the writers had a lot of material to draw upon. The movie moved along at a brisk pace, with a running time of just 107 minutes, which made for an efficient viewing experience. Still, I do believe that adding another twenty minutes could have allowed for more depth in the later part of the film. The acting was excellent across the board, especially Kelvin Harrison Jr.’s performance as Chevalier, which really drove the movie forward. The other actors, like Samara Weaving and Lucy Boynton, also gave strong performances that supported Harrison’s central role. Ultimately, Chevalier is a well-made film with an unusual story that's been lost to history for quite some time. I wasn’t sure what to expect going in, but I was impressed by the movie’s technical elements, its interesting narrative, and the quality of the performances. It might not be groundbreaking, but Chevalier is worth seeing if you want a well-crafted biographical film. Score: 78% ✅ Verdict: Great
