Following his involvement in establishing Castro’s government in Cuba, Guevara (played by Benicio Del Toro) traveled throughout South America before arriving in Bolivia, where he joined a small group of supporters to rally miners against President Barrientos. It doesn't take long to realize that his group is significantly smaller, lacking proper equipment and facing an opponent skilled in the tactics they employ. Steven Soderbergh presents this as largely a documentary-style account, and I felt it was rather a straightforward depiction of events, portraying Guevara as someone who repeatedly instigated revolutions. He’s shown as having strong beliefs, but also as someone who seemed less willing to acknowledge that other approaches might be valid. His opponent in Bolivia was equally adept at gaining support from local communities, many of whom had actually voted for him. There's a sense of conjecture throughout the film, and I felt it lost its drive at times, occasionally resembling a spaghetti western. It effectively highlights the disparity between the wealthy and impoverished, but his ideology isn’t clearly articulated; he seems to require some kind of cause, irrespective of whether he understands what those involved truly desire or require. The performances are unremarkable, and the audio quality is problematic during scenes set in the jungle. I believe this could have been shortened and incorporated into Part One. It's an interesting film, but not particularly compelling, and ultimately doesn’t reveal much about Guevara as a person.
