A road movie starring Tom Berenger and Erika Eleniak provides a lot of enjoyment. The plot centers on a young sailor—played by William McNamara—who’s tangled up with inventory fraud and is given the task of escorting an inmate from Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, to Charleston, South Carolina. The complication arises because the Chief Petty Officer overseeing the transport is a grumpy sort (Berenger), the prisoner is attractive (Eleniak), and this whole assignment occurs on the sailor’s final day before he leaves the service. Crispin Glover, Gary Busey, Dean Stockwell, Bitty Schram, and Marilu Henner appear in smaller roles. “Chasers” from 1994 represents Dennis Hopper's seventh and final directorial effort. Like his well-known film “Easy Rider” (1969), it’s a road movie—but this one incorporates humor that is generally understated and dry. I find it surprising that the film isn't more widely known, as it’s easily among the finest in its genre. Films like “The Last Detail” (1973), “Three for the Road” (1987) and “The Lucky Ones” (2007) share similarities, but this one is just as good or even better than those. There's a narrative thread that calls to mind Quentin Tarantino’s later work, "Pulp Fiction" (1994). From the very beginning, the story holds your attention and consistently delivers. It includes drama, comedy, relatable characters, romance, action sequences, opportunities for personal growth, and a beautiful woman. Regarding the latter, Hopper directs women in a way that avoids being exploitative—though there’s one overtly sensual scene with nudity (a word of caution for those who might be sensitive to such content). The film's length is 1 hour and 41 minutes; filming took place in South Carolina locations like Patriots Point and Myrtle Beach, as well as Columbia, Mount Pleasant, and Yemassee, alongside some scenes filmed in North Carolina, including Wilmington.
