A sweet young girl named Fern takes in an undersized piglet and raises it as her own, even though her father isn't thrilled about it. As the pig grows, it becomes too large for their house and is sent to a neighboring farm, where we are introduced to Wilbur. He’s a charming and inquisitive little animal who quickly integrates with his chatty barnyard companions and seems carefree until one of them mentions a frightening word! Understandably, he's quite scared, but what options does he have? Luckily, a clever spider named Charlotte also lives in the barn, and she creates a scheme that could possibly save him. What follows is a series of playful events that lets each animal reveal their personalities as Wilbur and Charlotte devise a way to remember the young pig. This is one of those stories I remember from school, and while it can sometimes be overly sentimental, it remains an entertainingly thoughtful narrative about belonging, working together, and lasting friendship. Even though time has passed and I’ve likely become more skeptical, it still manages to strip things down to their essence in a rather touching way. It's centered on hope and selflessness, and the voice actors (in the English version) provide us with a warm and heartfelt story that continues to celebrate a kind of secondhand humanity. Fanning is pleasant, the animation is pleasing to look at, and if the final ten minutes don’t bring a smile and maybe even a tear to your face, you've probably frozen your heart away somewhere.
