I’ve always loved "Sabrina," and as a result, I was pretty let down by this attempt to bring back the characters from the "Townsend Detective Agency." It was good that John Forsythe reprised his role as "Charlie" to maintain some connection to the original, but aside from that, it feels like a weak copy of the television series. Cameron Diaz as "Natalie," Drew Barrymore as "Dylan," and Lucy Liu as "Alex" take over the roles, with guidance from Bill Murray’s “Bosley,” and they get pulled into a story involving corporate spying and advanced theft. The nerdy "Eric" (Sam Rothwell) asks them to look into what his competitor, "Roger" (Tim Curry), is up to after his voice recognition software was stolen. It isn't until they make some headway that they discover their house has been trashed, leading them to suspect it’s a diversion—the criminals are really after “Charlie”! Naturally, the women want to help him, but they can’t even identify him in a lineup. As things escalate, they have to use every bit of intelligence and skill they possess, including some ninja moves, to uncover the plot before their boss ends up being anything but "Charlie." It functions adequately as a disposable action film. The script isn't particularly important; instead, it’s all about watching three women perform acrobatic stunts while clearly having fun, plus there’s Tim Curry hamming it up as always. Bill Murray feels underutilized, and Rockwell only does what’s necessary because his character is rather predictably expanded. There are a lot of familiar faces from television to keep things moving, and you can tell a sequel could easily come out of this. You'll most likely forget about it, but if it encourages people to rediscover the 1970s TV show, that might be its only real purpose—those were much more entertaining.
