A sense of excellence permeates every aspect of this film. Charade was directed by Stanley Donen, written by Peter Stone and Marc Behm, and stars Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. The cast also includes Walter Matthau, James Coburn, George Kennedy, Dominique Minot, Ned Glass, and Jacques Marin. It’s filmed on location in Paris, with Charles Lang handling the cinematography and Henry Mancini providing the score – his memorable theme tune earned an Oscar nomination. After her husband is killed shortly before she plans to divorce him, Regina Lampert (Hepburn) finds herself pursued by several men who believe she knows where a substantial amount of stolen money—a quarter of a million dollars—is hidden. Of all those now in her life, she trusts and aligns with the appealing Peter Joshua (Grant). The problem is that his name keeps changing, making it difficult for her to tell who’s good and who's bad – especially as bodies begin to appear. This is classic Hollywood entertainment showcasing two of its most beloved and sophisticated performers, demonstrating how a film blending genres should be made. It isn’t often you find a movie that succeeds on every level, functioning as both a comedy, a thriller, and a romance. But thanks to Donen's skillful direction, Charade delivers while also possessing an undeniable elegance. While it's understood that Grant & Hepburn have abundant charisma, they are given a strong script and a plot reminiscent of Hitchcock’s work to truly shine. Some critics have suggested there is no real danger in Charade, which means its reputation isn't entirely fulfilled. It's true that the film has a playful tone, as does "North By Northwest." However, peril certainly exists—consider the intense rooftop fight and the final stretch of the movie where our hurried protagonists navigate the Parisian underground, leading to a memorable encounter at a theater. Or what about George Kennedy’s intimidating presence with a metal hand, or James Coburn menacingly playing with matches? No danger, they say! There have also been some who claim that the story's construction is confusing. It certainly has many twists and turns, but it isn't overly complicated; everything is presented clearly, and all dialogue is crisp and easy to understand, set against the beautiful backdrop of Paris. This was the sole occasion Hepburn & Grant appeared together. It’s a shame, because despite Grant initially worrying about their age difference (Grant 59/Hepburn 34), to the point he requested some dialogue changes so Regina would be the romantic pursuer—their chemistry is undeniable and they make a very convincing couple. Coburn, Kennedy & Glass are effective villains, while Matthau has an important role throughout. Stylish, charming, suave, suspenseful, with an ending that’s genuinely surprising – both in terms of revelation and character resolution - Charade is not to be missed by anyone who appreciates a mix of comedy, romance, and thrills. 9/10
