"The Shiny Shrimps" (2019) sprang to mind while watching this movie, as Woody Harrelson takes on the role of "Marcus," a basketball coach who's fallen from grace. Following several incidents on the court, he’s directed by a judge to work with kids who have learning challenges through community service. From the outset, he finds the assignment unpleasant. The children lack basic team abilities and coordination, and the one player showing any potential doesn't want to cooperate with him. Fortunately, "Johnny" (Kevin Iannucci) has a sister, “Alex” (Kaitlin Olson), who convinces the coach to dedicate himself to the team—and you can probably figure out what happens next. It’s one of those films designed to make you feel good, featuring numerous characters and a dry, often dark sense of humor. There's an undeniable predictability to it, but like "Shrimps," its focus is on acceptance. The film emphasizes providing opportunities for everyone to participate, appreciate, and flourish—teamwork, family (meatloaf – yuck!), and a feeling of genuine joy become increasingly prominent throughout. It’s not something that will stick with you forever; the plot follows a familiar path. However, Harrelson and Iannucci both deliver strong performances, and I found it to be an enjoyable watch.
