Reno on Chalet Girl

7/10 · Mar 9, 2017

I believe this was a stronger movie overall. I simply wanted to be entertained, and it delivered on that front. The narrative isn't particularly original, though; it’s reminiscent of the more recent sports film, 'Eddie the Eagle'. It seemed like even the filming locations were identical. They share similar themes related to sporting events, but the execution and those involved are quite different. Coming from the director of 'All About Steve', the movie initially presents as a sports story before incorporating a romantic subplot in what felt like a standard setup. It's inspiring to see someone dedicate themselves to achieving their goals; there aren’t any easy paths, it always requires effort. This idea was presented in a humorous way within the film. The experience of entering an unfamiliar environment and learning new things is portrayed well, encompassing elements of friendship, love, and commitment to one’s convictions. The cast is excellent, with the exception of Felicity Jones' romantic partner. He wasn't terrible, but their on-screen chemistry didn't quite click, even within the brief timeframe of their romance in the story. The romantic scenes were somewhat predictable, though they are easily overlooked since there are other aspects to appreciate about the film. The action sequences aren’t spectacular; instead, they feel straightforward and believable. It should appeal to a wide audience as long as viewers don't have excessively high expectations. This isn’t a typical romantic movie; it’s actually better than that. _6.5/10_
