Given Andrew Davis’s previous success with films like The Fugitive (1993), there was an expectation that Chain Reaction would reach a similar level of quality. Instead, the movie feels rather unremarkable and average. I didn’t grasp the plot when I first watched it, but now, after revisiting it, I understand what's going on; while the story itself is functional, the film definitely has shortcomings. It isn't terrible—it’s certainly watchable—but it lacks distinction. One immediate issue that stands out is the soundtrack. The music choices are completely inappropriate for this kind of movie. A film's musical score is vital, and whoever was responsible for Chain Reaction’s music missed the mark entirely. It's essentially a chase story about someone wrongly accused who's being pursued by law enforcement, but those sequences themselves feel uninspired and could have been more engaging. I realize I keep using the word "plain," but when I say that, it isn't meant to be negative; as I mentioned, the narrative does hold together. Ultimately, Chain Reaction is a mediocre action movie—not terrible, just…well…ordinary.
