I found Cha Cha Real Smooth to be a truly enjoyable film, and I appreciated every moment of it. While Cooper Raiff's direction wasn’t perfect from a technical standpoint, his overall vision for the movie was remarkable. The characters felt very real, with dialogue that was both charming and genuinely sweet. Dakota Johnson and Cooper Raiff had wonderful chemistry together; their interactions throughout the film were what really made it work for me. Vanessa Burghardt also delivered an impressive performance, depicting her character’s struggles with autism and navigating social situations. Her scenes with Raiff were particularly well done, and their connection was incredibly heartwarming. Some reviews have pointed out issues with Raiff's writing concerning his character, Andrew, and another male figure. But I think that was intentional. Andrew is young and inexperienced, holding a romanticized view of the world that leads him to believe he knows what’s best for everyone—which simply isn’t true. His naivety served the film well, and his eventual realization at the end provided a satisfying conclusion to his character's journey. I did have one small reservation; the relationship between Domino and her husband felt somewhat odd. He is shown as someone unpleasant who treats her poorly, contributing to her depression. Yet she also values the stability he offers. This aspect could have been more clearly developed if we had seen some of the positive qualities in his character, rather than just the negative ones. That would have helped illustrate that his flaws were mostly superficial, based on Andrew’s initial judgments. I genuinely loved this film. It demonstrated how romantic comedies can be much more than just silly jokes; they can tell a sincere story that connects with viewers. The movie was both sweet and humorous, and it included some touching moments that evoked a variety of feelings in me. It quickly became one of my favorites of 2022, landing at number nine on my year-end list. Score: 89% 🏅 Verdict: Excellent
