It’s remarkable how much can shift in two decades for anyone. This movie had real promise; it could have been the funniest of the year, and its start was genuinely strong, but ultimately didn't live up to that initial impression. It felt as if everything just stopped abruptly, with a predictable explanation bringing things to a close. While the performances were excellent and many jokes landed well, the pairing of the two main actors proved to be among Kevin Hart’s best collaborations, similar to his work alongside Ice Cube and Will Ferrell. The beginning established what seemed like it would carry through the entire film. Twenty years later, an adventure starts, but that plotline felt quite familiar, aside from the impact of the opening scenes which lingered until the very end. There were some surprising moments, because the deviations from expectations were handled skillfully. The story largely centered on those two leads, so the efforts of other characters seemed to diminish. There’s a cameo appearance near the conclusion, and also some behind-the-scenes footage during the closing credits. I believe it's a better comedy than it initially appears, but certainly not top tier. It’s the cast that makes it worthwhile, more so than the writing itself. The action sequences were adequate, though used appropriately within the story. All in all, it was an enjoyable film to watch. _6/10_
