A movie with only two characters needs those characters to be at least somewhat appealing, or there's a serious problem. That’s where the survival film "Centigrade" goes wrong right from the start. This repetitive story, presented as based on actual events, is an unpleasant two-hour display of conflict between a husband and wife who clearly dislike each other. If the central figures can't stand one another, it becomes hard to muster any interest in their fate. Matt (Vincent Piazza) and his pregnant wife Naomi (Genesis Rodriguez) are vacationing in Norway when they find themselves stuck inside their rental car after a winter storm covers them with ice and snow. As their resources diminish, the threat of hypothermia grows due to the blizzard, and escape seems impossible, the couple struggles to survive within the small space of their vehicle. They have no knowledge of what lies beyond or how near they might be to being saved, so they must consider their limited choices: remain in the car hoping for rescue, or attempt an escape that could lead to freezing temperatures. This survival thriller doesn't deliver on its promise of excitement. Director Brendan Walsh immediately places viewers directly into the action and the cramped interior of the car, forcing a confrontation with the characters. Matt and Naomi are not likable at all; their constant arguing and marital tension make it hard to invest in whether they survive. Naomi is portrayed as irresponsible, and Matt isn’t particularly bright, hindering the film's potential because the couple is so difficult to connect with. When you find yourself thinking "it would be okay if they died," that’s a clear sign of poor character development.
