Lee and Robin have settled into a comfortable routine when he unexpectedly announces his desire for a divorce. He’s a writer who mostly writes travel pieces, and a high school reunion jolted him into realizing that life will remain dull unless he makes changes. His wife doesn't respond well to this news and finds comfort in a retreat that may be contributing to their difficulties. Lee believes Robin’s strong Catholic faith has stifled their intimacy, which subsequently affected his writing ability. He hopes that Bonnie, a story editor, might help him rediscover his creative spark. Meanwhile, Robin quickly moves on and begins working with television executive Tony, who presents her with fresh possibilities. As these two individuals begin to build separate lives, one finds it appealing while the other perhaps doesn't feel quite the same. Is this about finding something better or being cautious about what you desire? The film is a passable drama that showcases Woody Allen’s knack for bringing together a talented group of actors, but I found the storytelling felt disjointed and uneven; the central marital issues don’t prove particularly engaging. A memorable scene emerges with Leonardo DiCaprio portraying an extravagant movie star having a significant outburst with his girlfriend and threatening to damage the hotel, briefly injecting some energy into the proceedings. The film's length feels excessive, occasionally repetitive, and overly talkative, as the characters seem unable to stop talking long enough to hear what’s already been said, much less understand or apply any underlying lessons. The black-and-white cinematography and classic-sounding music are positives, but it fails to effectively mock the world of celebrity and the fleeting nature of fame.
