It's not easy to portray the effects of trauma effectively, but director Lila Neugebauer demonstrates a thoughtful and skillful approach with her first feature film, “Causeway.” This small-scale production explores themes of suffering, recovery, and connection, resulting in a very moving and relatable drama. While stationed in Afghanistan working for the Army Corps of Engineers, Lynsey (Jennifer Lawrence) was involved in an attack where her convoy was struck by an explosion. She sustained substantial physical and neurological injuries, requiring extensive rehabilitation. Now she’s returning to her home in New Orleans, but is struggling to reintegrate into everyday life. Like many veterans, Lynsey desires to return to active duty, though her doctor won't approve the necessary paperwork. To occupy her time, she finds work cleaning swimming pools; and when her vehicle malfunctions on her way to a job site, Lynsey encounters James (Brian Tyree Henry), a mechanic. The pair develop a connection based on shared experiences of trauma—both emotional and physical—which deepens their relationship in unexpected ways. The narrative deals with pain but also focuses on healing. There’s a palpable sense of internal struggle and despair that affects James and Lynsey, diminishing their hope. It's an intensely personal story with a straightforward plot that leaves a strong impression. Neugebauer’s filmmaking is beautifully done, enhanced by the restrained and compelling performances from Lawrence and Henry, which are easily among their finest achievements. Their interaction feels genuine, and their acting isn’t showy, contributing to a powerful portrayal of people struggling who find support in one another. “Causeway” expresses itself with a poignant clarity that elevates it beyond a typical trauma drama. It's a quiet examination of how humans must endure hardship in order to heal, and the film conveys this idea with considerable force.
