Check this out! Just look at what you’ve gotten yourself into! Caught was directed by Max Ophüls and adapted by Arthur Laurents from the novel Wild Calendar by Libbie Block. The film features Barbara Bel Geddes, Robert Ryan, James Mason, Frank Ferguson, and Curt Bois. Frederick Hollander composed the music and Lee Garmes handled the cinematography. Leonora Eames (Geddes) is trying to secure a comfortable life through marriage when she finds herself in a complicated situation with Smith Ohlrig (Ryan). Then Doctor Larry Quinada (Mason) enters her world, and things will never be quite the same again... There’s a lot of psychological complexity woven into this film. The story was altered somewhat by Ophüls after he came on board late as director. He softened some of the harsher aspects of Leonora's original character in the book, creating a sort of tug-of-war scenario. On one side is her controlling and domineering husband; on the other, an honest doctor eager to share his love with her. It might seem like an easy decision, but circumstance—the unpredictable nature of fate, life-affirming choices—makes for anything but a straightforward story. Smith Ohlrig is apparently based on Howard Hughes, who surprisingly didn’t cause too much trouble once the connection became public knowledge. He's a troubled character, mean and controlling, portrayed brilliantly by a chilling Robert Ryan; it’s just a shame there wasn't more time to showcase his forceful nature. The best scenes involve Ryan, and Ophüls skillfully films the disintegration of their marriage around the gloomy Ohlrig mansion, using reverse shots, perspective shifts, and clever shadow play to emphasize this relationship from hell—the impact of Lee Garmes’ (Nightmare Alley) photography and Frank Paul Sylos's art direction (The Great Flamarion) shouldn't be underestimated either. Leonora is a well-developed character; it would have been easy to portray her as weak and helpless, but the filmmakers gave her some strength and intelligence to balance the desperate situation she’ll find herself in later on. Geddes delivers exactly what's needed for the role, never resorting to excessive melodrama. Mason makes an entrance with grace and elegance that got attention from audiences here, a true professional who is perfectly suited to his part. Ophüls directs this film exceptionally well, leading it to a final scene that’s sure to leave you feeling conflicted. 8/10
