When Russ (Matt Smith) enlists his friend Hank (Austin Butler), who works as a bartender and lives a rough life, to watch his cat while he goes back to London to care for his ailing father, Russ is hesitant but agrees. He has no idea that Russ's dealings have put him in the path of some shady characters, and soon Hank finds himself needing to develop a higher tolerance for pain as Russians and then Hebrews start attacking him. The police get involved, and Hank’s paramedic girlfriend Yvonne (Zoë Kravitz) needs to come up with new ways to treat injuries - but all for what? Hank has no idea who these people are, what they're after, or where they might find it. Things don’t really begin to make sense until the British guy with spiky hair shows up again – though I wouldn’t count on it! Even though Butler spends most of the film getting roughed up - frequently wearing just his underwear from Calvin Klein - he still manages to bring a lot of charm to this silly crime story. It doesn't take things seriously when it comes to medical accuracy, and lucky breaks happen more often than would be realistic, but it’s a decent action-adventure movie that is violent and bloody, yet still darkly amusing. The memorable Hasidic Hebrews (Liev Schreiber and Vincent D’Onofrio) won’t drive on the Sabbath, but they seem fine with carrying guns. There's an intense enforcer who has qualities of an enraged chimpanzee, and there’s deceit everywhere before a resolution that is fairly obvious, but still nice to enjoy as the disasters pile up and the initially naive Hank realizes he and John Wick must be related somehow. A cat appears in the film, and so does a bandage - though there's a disclaimer at the end from the American Humane Society, so it seems like it can perform too. It borrows from other stories but doesn’t waste any time, and it proves that Butler is more than just a pretty face.
