It’s a widely accepted truth that stage productions, whether plays or musicals, don't always make for effective films because the two art forms are fundamentally different. To doubt this is to be unrealistic. I’ve never thought of Cats as an exceptional musical, though its popularity might suggest otherwise. Still, I couldn’t imagine a film adaptation succeeding, particularly given the costumes involved; it seemed impossible. But since production was underway, all that remained was to see how it would turn out. I'm aware there's already something called a "movie," but really it's just a recording of the stage show. Then the promotional trailers arrived and what they displayed felt strange, unsettling, even frightening. Though visuals aren’t everything in a film, something significant seemed to be at play here. Ultimately, failure was unavoidable. Cats is clearly made with good intentions but falls short; it's not just the poor CGI or how it makes you feel that contributes to this, but also its inability to pull you into the story’s world. It’s a peculiar setting, and I often enjoy unusual worlds, but this one feels misdirected. I don’t believe it's quite as disastrous as many film critics claim, and perhaps in time it will find a dedicated following—after all, lesser films have become cult favorites, so that could still occur. For now, Cats is simply an idea that didn’t translate well, lacking skillful execution or direction. While not a complete disaster, it's undeniably a massive letdown.
