The film centers on Vinsent, an orange cat who unexpectedly ends up alone with a simple-minded but aggressive dog and a mouse on a remote island. Their lives follow a predictable pattern within the walls of a large, aging house until a storm destroys their home, sending Vinsent and his companion, Moris, adrift at sea inside a piano. They are rescued by a tanker ship and find themselves in Russia’s Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, where Vinsent is quickly recruited into a group of cats tasked with guarding the museum's valuable artwork. Moris discovers that life has become considerably more dangerous, especially given his habit of nibbling on delicate fabrics from famous paintings. With the "Mona Lisa" scheduled to appear, tensions are high and security measures are increased; however, the painting is still stolen. Suspicion immediately falls on the mouse, but Vinsent begins to suspect a deeper plot at work. The animation style is fairly straightforward, yet it makes for an amusingly silly story with various distractions and a touch of romance involving the striking – though oddly animated – Kleopatra, leading up to an ending where I would gladly offer myself as a substitute for some of the artwork on display. It’s remarkable that this received a theatrical release in the UK, and it doesn't seem intended primarily for children. Nevertheless, it is worth seeing.
