This crime story, a road movie with Hopper and Foster, is entertaining. A mob assassin in the American West develops feelings for his target, and they end up fleeing both the mafia and the police. “Backtrack” was filmed in 1988 and initially shown in Europe as “Catchfire” in 1990. The director/star later distanced himself from it, using the pseudonym Alan Smithee. He then created a Director’s Cut that appeared on cable in 1991, again under the title "Backtrack." It takes cues from Eastwood's "The Gauntlet," which came out twelve years before. While it surpasses Hopper’s “The Hot Spot” from around the same time, it doesn’t quite reach the level of his “Chasers” (1994). Despite this, it’s worth watching for the talented cast—including Vincent Price, Joe Pesci, Charlie Sheen, Dean Stockwell, and many other familiar performers—and especially to see Jodie Foster at her best. She's never looked better than she does here. The copy I watched lasted 1 hour and 39 minutes, but there’s a longer version, the Director’s Cut, which is 1 hour and 56 minutes long, and reportedly even a three-hour edition. Filming took place in the Los Angeles area, as well as Seattle and New Mexico (specifically Albuquerque, Lindrith, Lamy, Taos, Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and Ranchos de Taos). GRADE: B/B-
