I realize this movie has problems, I mean, I stumbled across it late one night as a kid while watching cable TV. It was on HBO and seemed to be reserved for unsuccessful and poorly made films. Basically, I found it in a place where movies go to disappear—like the discounted section at a toy store. Still, I enjoyed it. It wasn't like other thrillers, and that’s saying something because action movies and thrillers often follow similar plotlines. They can be predictable, like people who all dress alike and claim to be outsiders. *Cat Chaser* was different. The story felt fresh. Peter Weller did the best he could with his role, as did the rest of the cast. It just seemed the director didn't quite know how to handle the script, which I later discovered—thanks to IMDB—was based on an Elmore Leonard novel, and that pretty much explains it all. Elmore Leonard isn’t considered a literary giant; his writing style can be off-putting. However, he has a knack for creating memorable characters and unusual settings and situations, and for weaving them into a solid plot. He's a writer of pulp fiction, but his approach was original in almost every way, and his stories are enjoyable to read. When his work is adapted for the screen, that uniqueness often shines through. Even if it’s not a good film—and this one wasn’t, even though the acting was decent—it becomes something you probably haven't seen before and likely won't see again. So, check it out; it's an Elmore Leonard story. Don't expect a masterpiece, but you will find a plot that is unlike anything else you've encountered, and to me, that’s worth a perfect rating—10 out of 10 stars. Judge it on its story, not its filmmaking quality. It's original, and we need more like it, especially now when so much of what we see feels repetitive.
