Jean-Pierre Aumont delivers something truly special, exceeding what one might anticipate, within this wartime story. He portrays the "Count," who provides refuge to “Maj. Falconer” (Burt Lancaster) and his tired group of soldiers inside his gorgeous castle, dating back to the 10th century. The men prepare some defenses, understanding that these old walls won't stand a chance against the approaching Nazi forces. It seems almost innocent that both the "Count" and the "Falconer" wish the enemy would avoid destroying or ruining his family’s historic estate. Signs point toward an unavoidable outcome, but during this time, the Major begins an affair with the "Countess," and the soldiers engage in various antics before being summoned to confront their adversaries. Peter Falk makes a memorable impression as Sergeant “Rossi” – a man who appreciates good bread – and Bruce Dern appears briefly as "Lt. Bix," who seems to have recently embraced faith, perhaps rather late. The film possesses a peculiar, dreamlike quality; some of the soldiers are concerned about preserving the artwork (similar to Paul Schofield’s role in “The Train,” another Lancaster film from 1964), while others simply focus on enjoying themselves. However, as the reality of their situation becomes clear, it transforms into a rather melancholy story of being surrounded, reminiscent of "The Three Little Pigs" and the wolf's attack on the straw house. It’s an unusual motion picture that I feel would have been more effective in black and white; the color seems to soften its impact somewhat, but it is still worth seeing.
