Tom Hanks delivers an outstanding performance in this carefully crafted story about a meticulous business executive who is left alone after his plane goes down on a deserted island. Unprepared for existence without modern comforts, yet possessing some intelligence, he must learn to survive, much like "Robinson Crusoe," relying on coconuts and whatever fish he can manage to catch. The narrative unfolds deliberately, which ultimately enhances the impact of Hanks’ portrayal as he confronts the physical, practical, and increasingly mental difficulties presented by his situation. Feelings of isolation and hopelessness struggle against his innate drive to live—leading him to create "Wilson," a combination of a volleyball and a pineapple, for companionship. The fact that it was a Fed-Ex flight enables Robert Zemeckis to inject some brief moments of humor as we see what people choose to ship to one another, and there's even an appearance by ice skates used for dental work! As the story continues, it becomes clear that rescue is improbable, so there’s little surprise when he decides to set out into the vast, unpredictable ocean on a raft constructed from plant fibers and video tape. While the danger isn't particularly intense, meaning the outcome feels certain, the dedication shown by Hanks, along with strong writing and directing, results in a captivating and occasionally unsettling film. I’ve never enjoyed stories centered around tropical islands—and that hasn’t changed.
