The follow-up to this is Witch Hunt, which I enjoyed immensely and watched prior to seeing Cast a Deadly Spell. It’s not terribly important, but instead of Dennis Hopper in the role, Fred Ward appears; he's likely familiar as either "the actor from The Right Stuff" or "Remo Williams." My upbringing was steeped in cheap paperbacks—Westerns, mysteries, those dime-store novels that most people wouldn’t showcase on a bookshelf, yet were simply everywhere around my childhood home. There was frequently one to grab and read quickly. So when Cast A Deadly Spell and Witch Hunt came along, they immediately became classics for me. Think Sam Spade in a magical setting—hardboiled detective stories blending with HP Lovecraft-style horror… it’s an ideal combination. It's straightforward pulp entertainment. And ultimately, the film is packed with nods to both genres that only someone who appreciates that kind of thing could truly get. I do wish there had been a third movie made.
