It's an excellent film featuring strong performances from Kay Walsh as Charlotte, Margaret Lockwood portraying Freda Jeffries, and Kathleen Harrison playing Emmie, all caught up in the schemes of the deceptive and deadly Dirk Bogarde, who plays Edward Bare. Following the sudden death of his older, affluent wife (Mona Washbourne), he’s frustrated to discover from her dubious legal advisor, Philip Mortimer (Robert Flemyng), that the inheritance isn't as generous as he anticipated. Consequently, he begins searching for a replacement beneficiary and settles on Freda, who makes it abundantly clear that anything she possesses will remain in her control—even after they marry. Still unsatisfied with this outcome, he considers arranging an unfortunate accident for her. The arrival of Charlotte, seemingly interested in purchasing property, marks a turning point as the mystery begins to unravel. Bogarde delivers a superb performance, and Lewis Gilbert skillfully connects the various characters while creating a subtle feeling of dread that persists throughout most of the story—though I felt this aspect was somewhat lacking. It's enjoyable viewing overall.
