People who grew up in Scotland around my age might recall Glen Michael's "Cavalcade," a Sunday afternoon television program showcasing cartoons, with "Casper," the friendly ghost, being one of the most beloved. Its popularity was likely boosted by its relative scarcity; announcements about it were always cause for excitement. It’s against that nostalgic feeling that I found myself genuinely enjoying this Spielberg action adventure film. The story begins when “Carrigan” (Cathy Moriarty) comes into possession of an old, run-down manor house and believes a hidden fortune lies within. Upon arrival, she finds it already occupied, and must figure out how to get rid of the resident ghost. She even calls in the "Ghostbusters," but they can’t help. Ultimately, she and her clumsy assistant “Dibs” (Eric Idle) encounter the widowed spectral scientist “Dr. Harvey” (Bill Pullman), who arrives at the house with his daughter “Kat” (Christina Ricci). They quickly adjust to sharing their home, and what follows is a series of playful escapades involving the ghost and young “Kat,” as they attempt to stop the treasure-seeking owner and perhaps resolve some past issues. If I had to point out something negative, it would be that there isn’t quite enough "Casper" in his own film; his three mischievous companions take up a bit too much screen time, and at times it borders on feeling like “Carry on Casper.” That being said, Ricci is quite captivating, and Pullman delivers a reliable, though not particularly memorable, performance as the adult figure. The visual effects are entertaining, and the ending (before it becomes overly sentimental) has echoes of "Frankenstein." It’s more akin to “Scooby Doo” than “The Conjuring,” but there's humor in the writing, and I found that the movie moved along quickly.
