This enjoyable, lighthearted ghost story features Bill Pullman, Christina Ricci, and Cathy Moriarty. A paranormal investigator who specializes in communicating with spirits and his daughter (played by Pullman and Ricci) relocate to a rundown mansion situated on the Maine coastline. The house is inhabited by a benevolent ghost alongside three playful troublemakers. Cathy Moriarty portrays the greedy inheritor of the property, while Eric Idle takes on the role of her aide. “Casper” (1995) successfully provides what it sets out to be: a "spooktacular" horror film reminiscent of Goosebumps—it’s amusing and silly, but not frightening. It feels comparable to Scooby-Doo, only without the dog and the teenage characters are in their preteen years. “Monster Night” (2006) and “Ghostbusters” (1984) also come to mind; however, I found "Monster Night" more entertaining overall, despite its considerably lower budget, and it boasts a better selection of attractive women of various ages. In “Casper,” Moriarty embodies the unpleasant antagonist, and Ricci, though only 14 during filming, delivers an effective performance in her part. The film’s length is 1 hour and 40 minutes, and it was filmed at Universal Studios City, California, with some exterior scenes showcasing Rockport, Maine. GRADE: B-/C+
