I’m pretty sure this could be my favorite film by Scorsese. He brings back his usual actors, introduces Sharon Stone into the mix, and manages to make three hours of movie time feel like they go by quickly. The story focuses on "Sam Rothstein" (played by Robert De Niro), who discovers there's a lot of money to be made in Las Vegas during the 1970s. Consequently, he’s sent by his mafia employers to manage the “Tangiers” casino, hotel, and general place of wrongdoing. At first, while he can be tough when needed, he has some sense of morality; and when he develops a relationship with hustler "Ginger" (Sharon Stone), it seems like he might have a chance at a normal life—or something close to it. That’s not the case for his friend "Santoro" (Joe Pesci), who comes along—supposedly to keep him safe—but quickly starts ripping people off to support his extravagant lifestyle. It would have been boring if everything had gone smoothly, and naturally, that's not what happens; “Rothstein” has to contend with criminals, law enforcement (which aren’t always separate), his increasingly unpredictable wife, and a friend who is a constant problem. The situation escalates when his wife and her ex-boyfriend/pimp "Diamond" (James Woods) pressure him, the gaming commission threatens his license, and “Santoro”—well, he's just trouble. Pesci seems to only have one way of acting, and it’s perfect for this role, bringing a believable level of unpleasantness to his frankly rather repulsive character. Stone doesn't get enough screen time perhaps, but she definitely shines in the scenes she shares with De Niro, who is clearly performing at his best. A clever surprise at the end works really well too! The film has excellent cinematography and a great visual style—it’s very good.
